Mustaches and Music:
Mustache Fest 2007 Set to Take Over Chicago Suburbs
Whether it’s real or fake, you can guarantee every man and woman
will be sporting some form of facial hair when the first band hits
the stage at Mustache Fest 2007.
The second-year celebration of mustaches and indie rock will take
place on Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m. at Stage 83 in Lemont,
Illinois.
Steinlager Pure New Zealand Lager and the Joliet Rock Company
present a six-band bill with Chicago’s own Oh My God headlining.
Concertgoers are encouraged to honor the legacy of the upper-lip
facial hair decoration by sporting any style of mustache they
choose. In between bands, festival organizers will be scouting those
in attendance for the best and worst mustaches for prizes.
“It’s just a great excuse to grow silly facial hair and listen to
some kickass bands,” said festival co-organizer Jeff Julian of
Joliet Rock Company. “It’s what Lollapalooza would be like if it was
planned by Burt Reynolds and Chuck Norris.”
Though the mustache dominates the festival namesake, the event is
also a great place to check out excellent local and regional touring
bands. Along with Oh My God, this year’s list of bands includes The
Rockford Mules (Minneapolis), Deconstructing Jim (Joliet), Flossmor
(Chicago suburbs), and Pattern Crawler (Dekalb).
Last year, nearly 150 people attended the first-ever Mustache Fest
in Joliet and organizers expect to double attendance this year.
“We had so much fun last year and we expect it to be the same this
year,” Julian said. “It’s music and mustaches—what could be better?”
And it’s not just for men. Julian said just as many women turned out
to enjoy the fest last year sporting fake mustaches.

HISTORY You may be wondering what
Mustache Fest is all about. Well, wonder no more, friends and
lovers. Mustache Fest is a celebration of music and that hirsute
feature we all know and love—the mustache. Over 100 people attended
the first Mustache Fest in June 2006 at the River Club in Joliet,
Illinois, and what a night they had. Seven bands, prizes for best
and worst mustache, and an unforgettable night of music and fun.
From fu-manchus and
handlebars, from truckstaches to the Rutherford B. Heinous, every
man, woman, and child, whether real or fake, was sporting some kind
of upper lip hair. And the music? The bands performing that night
brought the thunder. Mustache Fest played host to some of the best
local and regional acts: The Rockford Mules (Minneapolis), Emily
Shrine (Chicagoland); Casanatra (Minneapolis); Johnnyork
(Champaign); Fire of 1000 Suns (St. Louis); and Ten Minute Vision (Chicagoland).
The festival was organized and hosted by Jeff Julian and Matt Yeager
who are in the band Deconstructing Jim and Jeff's wife Janet. On
June 16, 2007, Mustache Fest will again be one of the premiere music
events in the area. Until then, start working on that ‘stache. Only
a few growing months left until Mustache Fest 2007. |
